My grandparents cultivated a produce garden that overflowed with vegetables, berry bushes, and fruit trees. My dad took pride in the curb appeal of our fescue lawn, while my mom explored everything from ornamental landscaping to kitchen gardening. That mix of beauty, utility, and family encouragement planted the seeds of my fascination for making things grow.

The name Gardening In the Weeds takes me back to my college days, earning money as a waiter. In restaurant slang, being “in the weeds” means your section is full, juggling many tables, orders are flying, and you’re working at a hectic pace—while appearing calm and in control. Gardening can feel the same at times: its joyful chaos of planning a garden layout, organizing a calendar, choosing plants, and researching about plant care – all occurring on nature’s tight seasonal schedule. Much of my garden knowledge comes from trial and error—and yes, I’ve killed plenty of plants along the way. Professionally, my horticulture experience includes landscape design, maintenance and management at theme parks, a botanical garden, landscape contracting, city parks, historic Revolutionary-era gardens, and even a celebrated golf club.
